To kill an animal to eat it is the highest virtue. Animals should all wish they could be so lucky to be chosen to be eaten by a human. It would be like being chosen by Julius Caesar to stand on the front lines in an upcoming battle. Only the strongest, healthiest, best bred animals are even eligible for harvest.
The method of slaughter is important, of course. We want to do it with as little suffering as possible. I have found that cutting the jugulars with a very sharp knife to be almost an instant death, with hardly any reaction from the animal. They feel a sharp pain and go to sleep.
To cause unnecessary suffering, or to prolong suffering needlessly, especially for creatures that has no will of its own is the epitome of wastefulness and evil.
