It's because of contraception. 100 years ago women were having 8 - 10 children without problems, while still living in poverty.

The job - literally THE JOB - of women is to have children. But as soon as you separate "sex" from "having children" via contraception (the pill, condoms, etc.), EVERYTHING starts going out of whack. Relationships now become a method of self-fulfillment: "who gets what out of the relationship", "how good is the he / she in bed", "I need to test how good the sex is before I marry", etc. Women / men become products instead of being tools. Marriage devolves into a way of self-fulfillment instead of fulfilling the God-given task of having children. Reality is, sex is 0.001% of a life-long relationship, so other factors matter waaaay more.

With contraception, either the men dominate the sexual dynamics (boomer age, incredibly easy to get women) or the women dominate (current age, lack of women, feminism). Without the shared goal of HAVING CHILDREN, women effectively become prostitutes and it's just about "how much money can I squeeze out of him" / "how much / many women can I enjoy while alive".

When the contraceptive mindset started to be dominant in the late 40s and 50s, sex became the main objective and children become an afterthought in male-female relations. Up and including abortion when the child wasn't "wanted".
