It wouldn't surprise me. Back in high school I was in a circle of friends that overlapped with the D&D crowd. One of the geeks made fun of a (very intelligent) guy who had gotten into weightlifting for just this reason.

Frankly, I think it's implied throughout pop culture (even those parts not pandering to 'nerds' aka slightly-intellectual dweebs with a victim complex) and people just don't question it.
