I mean, how else can you prove that you know what they were saying? If you didn't, you just didn't get the message obviously!

It's like when you're a kid and if you do something an adult doesn't like, it's always a forced conclusion that you 'picked it up from somewhere', but if you do something right *then* you are graced with acknowledgement of your own free will. Literally equating "you do what I like" with "you are mentally capable"
