It really isn't. I still have a copy of Chrono Trigger I can take out and play whenever I want, with my old save files. Every game I ever played on XBox live was later removed, so I have to buy it elsewhere.
The only value is playing new games. But game devs know this and so their entire incentive, with this kind of model, is to churn out overhyped slop that will get them on "Ultimate" and secure a consistent revenue stream regardless of actual sales of copies, because everyone has to pay them regardless of whether their game gets played. What is the point of piracy when all the games suck?

Silksong just released for $20 and its better than almost any game we used to pay 50-60$ a pop for.
For reference, those old games came with about $30 worth of hardware/physical manuals so $20 is about right.
