> end of judea

The history there is really interesting.

The Romans created Judea in recognition of the fact that they had their own king. Herod, however, was so bloodthirsty that he slaughtered his own family. By the time Jesus was crucified, his entire bloodline was extinct, and there was no one to take his place. That's why Pontius Pilate was overseeing the trial of Jesus.

IIRC, one of Herod's descendants was governing in a neighboring province, but he was such an idiot he all but removed himself with no heir.

Rome realizing that you can't have an entire province without a government, rolled Judea into Syria. The Syrian kings would then rule over Judea and that whole area.

In short, jews used to rule themselves, then Herod came along, ruined everything so bad that it wasn't possible for even Rome to prop up their kingdom. Jews destroyed their own country long before the Romans finished the job.

The sacking and complete destruction of Jerusalem was also ridiculous. Rome offered the jews every chance to settle their differences and choose peace, but they chose war. Rome would escalate and ask, "Do you want to escalate more? Or have you had enough death for a lifetime?" and the jews would say "ESCALATE!" It was practically suicide by cop at that point.

To this day, the jews cannot understand what they did wrong and blame Rome for the whole thing. Meanwhile, Rome was bending over backwards trying to establish peace and continuity in their lands. Every concession Rome made was met with violence and absurdity.
