"In his memoir, Stadtler wrote that they convinced government officials the way to stop the communists was to target their leaders. Stinnes and other industrialists then provided funds to contract the killings of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht.

The operation was carried out by Freikorps units under Waldemar Pabst, with help of the Wilmersdorf Bürgerwehr (a local citizen militia). Through surveillance, Luxemburg and Liebknecht were tracked to an apartment in Berlin’s Wilmersdorf district, from which they had been directing marxist revolutionaries during the January 1919 communist uprising.

They were taken to the Eden Hotel, where Pabst interrogated and tortured them for hours. Private Otto Runge struck both with his rifle butt before they were dragged out of the hotel. Luxemburg was then shot in the head by Freikorps Lieutenant Hermann Souchon.

Her body, weighted with stones, was dumped in the Landwehr Canal and was not recovered until four months later. Liebknecht’s body was delivered to an ambulance station and labeled as that of an “unknown man.”
