Masonry is different now than it was back then. It was a fraternal institution (albeit with a fair bit of pure larp) that was infiltrated by you know who at the turn of the enlightenment. American Masonry wasn't infiltrated until a good amount later because of geographical isolation. Even until the 1920s you had pretty solid masons from the US like Ford

You can read Washington's correspondence discussing exactly this online pretty easily
