White guy sees some stone. "Huh, I can whack on this stone and shape it into anything I want. Let's see, what can I make with it? I know, let's build a cathedral. Let's make it to glory God alone. No one will remember me, I will never get paid what I am worth, I am going to wear out my body and waste all of my energy and youth on shaping stone, but I think it is a good idea."
To a much lesser degree, I've done stone work like this at a rock quarry. It's tough work and can be hell on your wrists (the constant pounding of the chisel), but it's fulfilling to create something new with your hands and effort.
This guy is really talented, even to be able to make those chisel hits at a horizontal angle. You usually want to always make vertical downward strikes, as gravity assists the strike, and it's much more difficult to maintain the correct angle of the chisel and hammer strike when doing it horizontally. Even a minor change in angle for the chisel or hammer strike can drastically alter what and how much material is removed, often ruining a piece if the angle is off, as you end up removing too much material, digging into the stone because the angle was too severe.
Agreed. I've certainly never done anything like this but I have worked with stone before, and while this talented & Divinely inspired man makes it look incredibly easy it's anything but.
I do woodworking as a hobby, far more forgiving for someone like me who has big calloused butcher's hands rather than the hands of an artist. Still I've been making more of an effort to increase the dexterity & flexibility of my hands and wrists, which goes a long way.
What other race does this? None. NONE.
