It's the American lines that have problems. They cared more about an angular slanted rear look than function. The German lines still look like a regular dog in the back without that gigantic angular slant. Western GSD's were more about looks, family dogs but still make good dogs to protect a house. Eastern lines were much more about work with the "Czech" line basically being a big Belgian Malnois.

This is why Germany has all their own shows and stuff. They consider the American lines a joke. Western lines are prob better for MOST families, Eastern's and Malnois are great dogs if you have the time. I've had both, both were ideal at certain times in my life. Just avoid the big slants and AKC standard nonsense. Might as well be a different breed.
