It just moves slowly and incrementally. The history books put everything together in nice bullet points which makes everything look like it happened so fast.

No one incident is going to cause anything, but we're seeing a slow boil all over the world for a variety of different (and related) issues. Something will break the camel's back eventually.

This is key. The history books compress the build up to the (first) Civil War into a half a page or so but in reality it was about a decade of time. Same with the rise of the Reich - it took a decade to gain power and another more than half of one for the Final Solution to finally get implemented.
