Ehh, after so long of being betrayed by leadership I can understand worry of increased government powers when we're still held hostage by the laws forcing us to tolerate threats and evil among us, but the solution isn't equal treatment, but one of enabling selective vigilantism so as to rebuild that trust.

There are so many demographics that are only kept alive because of police protection and if that police protection only applied one way and in our favor these demographics could be killed off without the populace worrying about a government granting itself more power without having even proven it's willingness to solve the problem.

It would also be something to give the common man purpose in life even if he's unable to start a family if he knows he's permitted to wage a war on his enemies on his own terms while being able to retreat to the protection of the state.
