Ironically, I dont think Tolkien elves were ever intended to have pointy ears, they were just gigachads who represented everything good in white people (unlike pre-tolkien elves, which were literally just devils taking on fair forms to mess with people). Anime elves also interestingly use ears that point outwards rather than backwards, which anime demons also generally have.
