Even in times of total peace, we should still prepare ourselves to kill or die for what's important to us. That's what keeps our loved ones safe; the knowledge in our enemies that they will take serious casualties if they cross us, even if we have a current truce.
Not being prepared to kill is not a virtue. Much like "tolerance", it's merely cowardice patting itself on the back.
