They're the cheapest and most readily available filters in my area. What are they made of, and to what degree do they filter things?

You can get inline faucet filters that filter out all sort of stuff on demand.

I also have a an RO filters for water I put in my aquarium / water my house plants. But cheap RO is slow (or at least mine is) 1 gallon per 4 hours.

RO takes out dissolved solids which are safe to drink but build up in your aquarium.
