They're the cheapest and most readily available filters in my area. What are they made of, and to what degree do they filter things?

Its a single stage carbon. Only filters taste and rust or heavy particles. You need RO for real filtration

It's mostly activated charcoal and other things that are good at trapping things that aren't water

It’s the best you can get without paying a lot. Take the glass edition for even less plastics and you have to change the filter about every 1-2 months.

You can get inline faucet filters that filter out all sort of stuff on demand.

I also have a an RO filters for water I put in my aquarium / water my house plants. But cheap RO is slow (or at least mine is) 1 gallon per 4 hours.

RO takes out dissolved solids which are safe to drink but build up in your aquarium.
