Reality is that "non Hispanic white" probably always was a minority in places like Texas and New Mexico. The tejanos were the original Texans and are of Spanish descent, and probably always put down "white" on the census. New Mexico was also mostly settled by Spaniards.

Considering that "latino" now covers everyone from a blonde haired blue eyed Argentinian to a coal black nigger from Haiti, it makes the demographic situation in these states look utterly calamitous near instantaneously after the census started changing in the 80s.

This is not to say that the demographic situation isn't utterly fucked. Oh it is. But a good number of the "Hispanics" listed under the census particularly in states that came from Spain/Mexico are just descendants of Spanish colonists. Tejanos make up about 40% of Texas' population for instance, which is a majority of its hispanic population, tejanos are pretty much majority spanish whites.

And the Spanish didn't mix with the nomadic and extremely violent closed off north American desert dwelling tribes the same way they did with allied tribes to the south of Mexico. They mostly kept an arms length away from each other and the Spanish settled the southwest US in much the same way England settled the east coast.
