Russia will NEVER compete with the US in any realm, and they never have not for over 100 years now, and to be frank, they are your best bet. Nope. America was colonized *way* before Australia. British prisons were overflowing with inmates for decades, they were dumped in the colonies. Australia became a penal colony because the British *lost* America. It's called the transportation act of 1717, and they were doing it before it was codified into law. Australia had more convicts sent over because peak industrial era Britain had more crime than earlier industrial Britain, to be sure, but the truth of the matter is that we don't know how many convicts were sent to America. The records are shaky, especially prior to the act of 1717 which set regulations on the process, 100 years after colonization began and 100 years after the British started using penal labor in the Americas. It's likely a higher number than the given estimates based on the fragmentary data that *does* exist.

America was founded by Europeans. Europe's worst and Europe's best. Most of the Europeans that came to America, however, were completely normal and uninteresting people. So it came from the best, the worst, and majority from the average of Europe. What does that mean then? America is an extension of Europe. It's a microcosm of Europe. Every single thing that happened on the European continent before a little over 400 years ago is shared between Americans and Europeans, and for a vast majority of Americans it's really only about 200 years ago or less that we share the exact same history.
