Well, in the case of rome it was pretty fucking stupid to resist foreign rule because it ended up causing the genetic (and almost the cultural) extinction of their entire race. All over petty reasons overall. At a certain point its better for the survival of your people to bite the bullet and not be a hopeless idealist.
