The actual word for the hottentots is San or khoisan. Almost their entire race was destroyed by bantus. South Africa happened to be colonized at a pivotal time when the bantus had not reached the furthest southern extent of the continent yet, which is the only reason they still exist.
San (sine) and Khoisan (cosine) make me believe they are nomadic/migratory and were visited by early researchers and given their name due to the periodic movement.
Theyre two tribes made up of effectively the same people. The khoi and the San, the term for their race as a whole is khoisan. "Khoi" is a word used by the khoi for themselves, "san" is a term for the... san that was created by the khoi. , which was originally a khoi slur against them. So khoi actually is an endonym, san is an exonym used by the khoi. Outsiders didn't create either term.
Hottentot is the exonym used by the Dutch that is of unclear etymology. It was used for the khoi. Bushmen refers to the San and it was used because they lived in the bush. Kafir is another word for both groups as well as bantus that originated as a slur used by Arabs against non-muslims, and among Arabs in africa, against niggers in particular, the Dutch and the English picked it up somewhere along the line.
Sorry for the (tangent)
