played a lot of them when i was a kid, borrowed them between class mates, enjoyed them. mostly stuff like Age of Empires 1 and 2, Westwood CnC and some other niche RTS games of the olden days.

i thought i liked RTS games, so saw the Steam Strategy sale and the Summer sale as an opportunity to get back into them after years of "abstinence".

the last two RTS games i can remember having fun with were Dawn of War 1 and xpacks back in the day and Dawn of War 2 later on. Dawn of War 1 isn't really like AoE or C&C despite having base building similar to AoE and squad-recruitment for infantry like C&C, and Dawn of War 2 while lacking base building which i am hankering for really makes up for it with solid squad based real-time tactics gameplay.

i thought i liked RTS games, until i realized that there are only three RTS games (above being the exception): Age of Empires, Command & Conquer and War/StarCraft.

edit: there's also Total Annihilation/SupComm-likes, Homeworld-likes and Sins Of A Solar Empire-likes. wow 6 to choose from!

i sit somewhere between Total War and CK3, in Total War if for OCD reasons in any game i want a complete region or province or whatever i have to well go to Total War because the AI often refuses peace offers even if there are no armies left or if i am sieging their capital (my Total War experience is Shogun 2, Atilla Medieval Kingdoms 1212AD mod, Thrones of Britannia, Warhammer 1 and Warhammer 2);

and then i think to myself, how stupid, just let me war for this one specific area and i boot up CK3 only to be annoyed by the fact that i have to jump through hoops just to declare war at all, or play stinky Tribal and get curb stomped by mid game Men-At-Arms (cries in 867 Norway)
