Tobacco and nicotine maybe not so much, but cigarettes are something else. Somebody here once wrote/explained how cigarettes are made... something about paper pulp soaked in watered down nicotine, laced with tar, gasoline & other chemicals. It's essentially just paper pulp with pints of hell-knows-what. Tobacco is virtually non-existent in that chemical cocktail.
Also - smoking is actually just a few hundred years old. 400, to be precise. And even then it was mostly contained into western Europe. In eastern Europe and southern Europe it only gained a foothold some 150 years ago.

This, you would have to get raw leaves or buy tobacco from someone you trust (maybe natives?) and roll your own with non bleached paper. It won't give you nearly the buzz you get from a marlboro though lol. Mainstream cigs are literally just nicotine delivery devices.

I like to grow plants, so I have raised tobacco, although I don't smoke it. Nicotiana rustica, also known as Indian tobacco, is MUCH stronger than Nicotiana tabacum, which is what the entire tobacco industry uses. The less strong variety was chosen so people would smoke more of it and increase profits.
