He was so innocent, the governor joined the posse to get him from prison, take him 200 miles back to the town he committed the crime, and strung him up.
All because the Georgia Supreme Court would not allow the death penalty.
I recently moved to a neighboring county, but the local newspaper ran a story about Leo Frank. From what I recall, he was sentenced to death, but appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court. The court sided with Frank, sparing death and leaving him with life in prison.
That pissed off everyone, so governor, attorney general, and possibly the lieutenant governor joined the posse, got his ass out of prison around Macon to take him back to Marietta to string him up.
