I would argue that it was really only the ruling class that was descended from Vikings. And that was slowly watered down as they interbred with high-status Slavs over hundreds of years. Same thing in England: the Norman conquests put a bunch of Norman men in positions of power, but they interbred with important Anglo-Saxon and Scottish families.
