Most of the supposed inbreeding only occurred in very isolated communities due to there being almost no option than marrying your cousin or second cousin. Even in those communities they often exchanged blood with arranged marriages.
Can you imagine walking for a week straight one way just to set up the marriage of your first born daughter? It might even have been a fully fledged expedition of five or more men hunting and foraging whatever they could on their way, because God knows that the trails were not well suited for horses.
I would also suggest that our genetic diversity was much better in the old times because we were seafaring nations very early on, and as we know most of the population is on the coasts or along rivers allowing for better exchange of genetics.
