The shotgun was the excuse, but really it was because he was affiliated with the Aryan Nation. Weaver was a bad goy and jews wanted to make an example. The far-right movement in Idaho basically died after Ruby Ridge scared everybody.

He wasn't even directly involved with them, he just traded with them from time to time because they were the only people living anywhere near him and his family.
