Well, allegedly their brigade was established because it was thought that they, being convicts, would not allow emotions to get in the way of annihilating their enemies, which would have included polish resistance members, a decent chunk of whom were citizens with no prior warrior experience, who could blend in with the actual citizen populace.
The dirlewanger brigadiers were called "The black hunters" for a reason, I suspect.
