It's not that expensive and the thing is you don't need coverage, you need to cover your vitals. Front plate should be 3 inches below the top of your sternum. Get medical kit and know how to use it. Tourniquets, gauze, basic stop the bleed stuff.
I wouldn't discourage people from armor but everything has a time and place. If youre entrenched holding a position, great. The opening days of conflict we are moving hard and fast, striking soft targets in hit and run tactics that we outnumber them at least 3 to 1 and blending back into the population.
That said. Ceramic is more expensive but steel is cheaper and it won't break. Ceramic has a shelf life and it can shatter if dropped.
What's going to be far more effective is going to the thrift store and getting a shoulder bag that can conceal a pdw type weapon and or a shit ton of magazines. If you listen to people who've been in fights they always want more mags. Around 13 is a good number. The high speed guys with just 3 up front are stacked 30 deep and have a metric ton of support behind them.
The only thing to watch out for with the steel armor is that it must have an excellent anti spall liner. With no anti-spall liner or a shitty one a steel plate is almost as bad as nothing. It will deflect shrapnel right into your neck. Watch some armor test videos if you don't believe me.
Any name brand set with the NIJ rating you want should be fine. There are armor test videos on youtube if you want more assurance. Don't buy cheap chinese crap. $500 should be close to enough.
You should start with making it, there are youtube vids, search "DIY body armor"
I would rather have cheap armor for 10 of my friends and family than 1 real set for myself. If we had the money that it wasn't an issue we wouldn't be talking about it
If you can afford a gun you can afford some armor. It's like 500 bucks. And no offense but without some serious research I would not trust home made armor. Even if you can shoot it at the range and prove it stops what you want it to, there's still fragmentation to worry about.
I got solid metal plates, whatever those ar500 things are, thinking I'd like to be able to stop an ak47 round at a distance. After wearing them for 10 minutes I think I'd rather just have my guts blown out.
Train with them on. They 40 lbs. You can wear it while you work out and walk around all day. Wear it to work. In 2 weeks you will be stronger and you won't notice.
I want something for about $500 that has good coverage and is flexible so that i can be on the run or agile while wearing it.
Some of the plates for sale are way too fucking small

Get one of these and you can fit soft 3a armor or some plates.
It can be concealable under a shirt and you can have a couple of AR mags on the side.
If you need to go more overt, you can wear the slick armor and put a chest rig over it. This also gives you the option for different setups.
You can have an AK, AR, SMG, etc setup and not have to buy different plate carriers.
