So what must have happened is the following: The racial activist group handling the affairs of the family of the boy who murdered Jeff Metcalf's son learned of the demonstration in support of justice for Jeff Metcalf's son and contacted Jeff Metcalf with a demand that he publicly condemn it. We can suppose that Jeff Metcalf initially sought to be excused from this tasking, but they pressed him, offering to facilitate the ritualistic public condemnation over the phone, and Jeff Metcalf agreed to do it.

This also confirms that Jeff Metcalf appeared at the Anthony NGAN press conference with the intention of apologizing to the family of the boy who murdered his son. Though he's already done damage to at least the sentencing phase of the trial, the Anthony family did his son's spirit a big favor by assuming Jeff Metcalf appeared with malicious intent and kicking him out before he had a chance to get down on his knees for them.
