It a Chinese kanji but its pretty much a Japanese thing , Wa has multiple meanings in Japan, it can mean harmony, or what the post said about casting out anything against the proper order, or it can be used to describe anything Japanese, anything that's considered traditionally Japanese in Japan is described as "Wa"
