The best part about the crusades is that it drew off and killed a good amount of the French knights who would have otherwise terrorized the European peasantry in the countryside. They died killing browns, but would have been just as happy doing it to helpless white peasants without weapons back in France.

Chivalric culture was not some King Arthur, let me put my cloak in a mud puddle for you mylady, Shakespeare shit like you think, these guys were fucking shit bags.

Yea the crusaders all get romanticized but many of them were no better than the Red Army. Just look at how they betrayed and sacked Constantinople.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Do you not realize that the emperor was collaborating with the Sultan? The pilgrims were being attacked by supposed rogues and brigands all along the way. Empire towns were closed to them. The Byzantines displayed themselves as being hostile to the Franks, who they were jealous and nervous of.

And the thing that kicked off the first sacking was the Dutch pilgrims found a synagogue or Mosque being allowed to operate, so they breached it and started killing the people inside. Not only this, but some 100 years prior, the Greeks killed nearly every Latin inside the city and the surrounding countryside.

Everything the Greeks got, they deserved.

The mosques and the synagogues came to Constantinople AFTER the 4th Crusade not before.

The Greeks were hostile from the first onward. They plead for Rome's help but sabotaged the Catholics every step of the way.

And according to Gibbons there was one there prior to the sacking of the city.

I think it was mostly the franks, honestly. They managed to piss off sicilians to the point they started what was essentially a world war. Theyre the same idiots who decided to sack Constantinople to install a puppet regime when the Pope had ordered them to fight muzzies.

They did it because the Emperor wanted them to move along because they were misbehaving in the city, He offered the leaders many rich gifts, but they could not keep their soldiers in check in the market places.
