The problem was that they were flying around aggressively. So when I approached that hole I swatted a lot of them mid-air as they were chasing me, and I wore a scarf and more to protect myself. One even got caught in my scarf as I ran home. That's when I still tried some half-measures like putting a small rock on their entrance.
