The most believable story is the one where he shaved the mustache, put on an ordinary uniform, then went out fighting anonymously like Constantine XI.

But to be fair, constantine xi did NOT fight anonymously at all. The turks knew exactly who they were fighting and the men behind him knew exactly who he was
