Probably fake, but funny. IIRC, the Fed only took over printing paper money and the US Mint still makes all the coins.

Those thinly coated zinc discs we use for coins aren't made from anything worth clipping anymore, so it wouldn't be surprising if the minting process really was getting simplified to cut costs. It's been a long time since quarters were made with silver, after all.

Cents are copper-plated zinc. (Switched from copper in 1982)

Nickels are Cupro-nickel (75% Copper, 25% Nickel). Only coin to *not* change composition.

Dimes, quarters and halves are cupro-nickel 'clad' copper. Changed in 1965 from 90% silver, halves became 40% silver until 1971, when they became fully clad as well.
