i've researched its start and yeah I think it was 2000s some divorced dudes, it strikes me as fairly "organic" in origin.

in 2010s it was a lot of talk of a "marriage strike" rather than "marriage abolitionism": some guys delaying marriage until better conditions arise or simply not marrying certain women, versus saying that marriage was always an unacceptable institution.

mgtow in the last decade became more exclusively associated with the "marriage abolition" position, but the posture of guys choosing to not date or marry went pretty mainstream for a lot of practical reasons of women being picky and it becoming more expensive to date and have a family.

"MGTOW" as an acronym got banned from like reddit and tiktok maybe 5 years ago and thus "mgtow" is kind of dead as a phrase, but the actual practice of marriage delay or avoidance is pretty mainstreamed imo.
