We are putting people through the education system who should not be put through the education system. Simple as that.

It used to be, not so long ago, actually, that the only people who pursued higher ed were people with too much time and money, or that were religiously devoted to the task. Everyone else pretty much ignored them and went about perfecting their craft and feeding their family.

We are rapidly approaching the day when getting a degree has nothing to do with getting a job in a highly skilled industry. I have been quietly working out how it is quite possible we'll bring back apprenticeships. We'll take 12 year old boys, put them in the workplace, spend part of our day teaching them how to do simple things, and then more and more complex things, until they are capable of doing their craft when they are 16 or 18. At which point, we'll send them out to work for 6 months at a time at various companies that do similar things. After 4-5 years of this, they finish their masterwork, become a titled master of their art, and settle down at one company where they will work until they die, taking on apprentices and journeymen until they are no longer capable of doing so.

I had thought that we'd have software engineers become business owners, but I don't think they have the right skill set. It's better to have companies hire masters and let the masters subcontract out to journeymen and apprentices.

And dumbing it down to accommodate them, to the point that normal people are stunted in their education as a result.
