Takes a ton of military resources to defend that area from Russia, and the more US military is lurking that close to the Russian border, the angrier Russia will be. It's retarded to take minerals from there when Commiefornia has all the minerals the US needs.

Huge deposits have been found around Scandinavia too, more than enough to cover all of EUs needs. Even EU doesn't bother extracting anything near the Russian border because of how stupid and expensive it is. The only advantage is the cheap Ukrainian workers, but there isn't much of those left in the area.
