It's a core practice in the Christian Old Testament, too. Same with physical circumcision. These barbaric, abhorrent acts that are clearly a product of the minds of jews, were supposedly ordained as practices not just permissible, but holy according to the Lord God. The claim that "the new covenant undid all that," doesn't let you wiggle out of the fact that it was there in the first place.
