I think the neanderthal is what gives us an advantage. What if neanderthals werent cave dwelling savages, but rather a sophisticated race that ended up dying off due to simply being outbred by other human races?

It's widely accepted that that's exactly what happened. Neanderthals were smarter than average, but not aggressive enough to outbreed other races once territories got mixed up to the point they just got absorbed into the other races--literally what's happening to Europeans right now.
