The funny thing is that food stamps began life as a subsidy for farmers, to keep them employed during the Great Depression and avert a collapse of the entire food system. However, back then, farming was significantly less consolidated.

Now the vast majority of farmers owe their souls to one of like five Big Ag conglomerates, part of the problem being:

1) Inability to buy arable land without having millions to drop up front.

2) The ridiculous expense and "equipment as a service" nature of farming equipment.

3) Copyrighted / licensed seed and fertilizer supplies.

4) Financial security of a corporate overlord.
