At least if he threw out a bag of diamonds or hold bricks he'd have a chance of recovery. The fist step of garbage removal is crushing it, the next is burying it in wet mud. The hard drive will not survive either

This is the main issue, no way even the best data recovery companies could extract anything. Even if he does find what's left of the drive.

100%. If it was not crushed then the bag it was in was and subsequently all fluids, acids, debris, etc will either damage it or have done so already. Of course our modern idiot world, he will land a 20M$ deal to film his journey for Netflix and come out ahead any ways.
