The more I think about it, it's really less about pattern recognition, but more about the ability to reject the indoctrination. Stubbornness can do it (or grit, masculinity, integrity), common sense can do it (skepticism), intelligence paired with curiosity can do it (asking the right questions, acquiring information).
It's possible that it takes an above average trait in either of those to break through, and perhaps intelligence has the disadvantage that indoctrination aims to utilize it to rationalize irrationality, and creates the illusion of smartness via ideological-societal compliance, so one requires more of it to compensate.
Midwits lack all of those traits by the nature of what they are - close to averages.
