Belief in hell was once a good thing for society, when *everyone* believed it. A ruling class who had no earthly power above them, yet a personally held fear of eternal torment for their misdeeds, was a much more benevolent one.

Nowadays, "Yeah? Well, *you're* going to hell!" has become the petulant cry of the man who has had every last ounce of power stripped from him, and I cringe when I hear it.
