I don't know if it's changed in the last 10 years, but for me it was a stepping stone away from neocon republicanism.
The key is, that it's a stepping stone, people who camp out there are most likely contrarians or pompous cowards who prefer to be part of a group they know are going to lose because it allows them to feign superiority by posturing super smart people who have all the answers (except how you enforce the NAP) knowing they'll never be called out on their bluff.
