Years ago when I was in Hungary I was told to pronounce it "Budapesht", because pronouncing it "Budapest" was gay.

Was that my friend fucking with me, or is that real? I suspect it's real.

It is indeed pronounced "Budapesht." A single "s" is pronounced like the English "sh." "sz" is pronounced like the English "s".
