The temple was a tool of backwards ecumenical control and wealth extraction. You couldn't just "get clean" as a jew, you had to make a sacrifice appropriate to your "sin," to do that you had to pay to get into the temple grounds, then change money so you could pay the priests while you offered them a sacrifice. They would, of course, only use some of the sacrifice for your condition and save the rest for themselves. To sell, of course.
Did your wife have her period? Did you touch her, even a little bit, when that happened? You're unclean. You'll need the ashes of a cow.
Are you really unclean? Like.. sex during her period? Then we need a red heifer who has never been put under yolk to be sacrificed. Beaucoup bucks there, sinner.
