The difference is that if Russians come down that way now, the Brits and Scandinavian navies are there and keeping the Russians away from the US east coast too. If they take over Greenland, they'll be on their own and pretty fucked as EU has about 3 times as large navy as the US.
I don't really see an issue. Its not some play to enslave the Greenlanders. If there is a legitimate economic route to making Greenland a territory that both sides agree to then what's the issue? Land is just land man. Its the people who give it purpose. So if a solution is reached that satisfy the people and end up helping them and us, what's the problem?

Look man I don't see an issue with a country finding a nonviolent route to get larger control of a place like that. Now if he comes in and overdeveloped the place and made it some attempted resort island then fuck that. It's an autonomous territory of Danemark, with its own population.

If they wanted to live by themselves out on the tundra that was always allowed, the Danes won't go out on the tundra, they stay in town at all time. Some Inuits do live out on the tundra in temporary settlements, living of seal and whale meat for months in a row. They are the only ones allowed to hunt whale too, special rights designed specifically so that they can live self sustainable in their own settlement if they wanted to.
Yet they always come back, to work, make money and buy Danish liquor. And they have the guts to complain about colonization. Even tho the Danes were there 200 years before the Inuits arrived.

Ironically I don't think either the US or China could give them any better deal than what they already have with Denmark. The US wouldn't fund free healthcare or education for instance and might introduce property taxes while fucking up the landscape in search for minerals. China would just outright oppress them, maybe even relocate them. I guess you can say, they're out on thin ice right now. Fishing for a lot, but might lose it all soon.
