It's both. They were both. Both types of people have existed for all of history. I know for a fact that a majority of my ancestors were poor and did not go to school and thus would be "uneducated" as well. And this applies to everyone, unless you're somehow from an unbroken line of nobility, which doesn't exist.
The difference? The law of the land was based on common morality and Christianity, and the above type were, in general, unable to have anywhere near as much influence as today.
I agree! You're right that it was both. They weren't wholly good, nor wholly bad. I still thought I'd share the meme though, because I found it thought provoking and uplifting.

They weren’t wrong. They were just teaching the first part and completely forgetting the second part. It’s like when they teach you about the death of Jesus. They tell you the Romans did it but leave out the rest

Or when they show you all of Hitler's most fiery speeches but totally leave out the rest of the man. "Hurr durr, how could the Germans be so dumb to vote for a man like that, better not make the same mistake, right kids?"
Being poor is when you don't consume the newest product.
Being greedy and oppressive is when you don't allow other tribes to plunder your country.
