Most medical "treatments" are based on what insurance will and will not pay for, not what's most effective or best for the individual.
For example, if you and I went and got a clot shot together, we're both going to get the exact same dosage in the needle, regardless of our weight, sex, whether someone's pregnant or not, race, whatever. You could be 400 lbs and I'm at 185 lbs. We should likely be getting different dosages just based on that! The reason is because insurance pays for a particular dosage...not what your doctor deems would work best for you or me. Most things are done that way in the medical industry.
Chances are, this guy or his family have been done wrong. That or he's a former gay lover!
