Sounds like a refrigerator. Because of typhus and the war a lot of people died, civilians as well as soldiers. Many of which were cremated in the camp crematoriums. But because of the crematoriums limited capacity, bodies need to be stored somewhere, sometimes for several months before cremation can take place.
With such long term storage refrigeration/freezing is absolutely necessary, or the body will rot before it goes into the oven. To this day it's common practice in Germany, Scandinavia and probably other places too. Much of what the Nazis did was state of the art for it's time, it was a very advanced society.
